IT Support In Portland With No Contracts

Why do IT companies insist on signing contracts with their clients for IT support service?

Well, there are several reasons. Here are a few common ones:

  • Cybersecurity threats create enormous accountability between the IT company and the client. When things wrong, somebody has to be liable.
  • IT companies sometimes have complex price structures that can confuse clients no matter how clearly the company explains them. If a client doesn’t understand why they are being charged for a service, then an IT company can reference the contract — so can the client.
  • The contract keeps both the IT company and the client from suddenly disappearing. And for good reason. Setting up or restructuring an IT infrastructure requires a lot of time, energy, and money. If one party decides to suddenly call it quits, it could be a huge waste.
  • The contract, however, does give either side legal leverage to pull out of the deal under the conditions stipulated in the contract.
  • And last, the contract gives everyone a clear understanding of what happens if equipment or software is damaged by either side.

When you stop to think for a moment, all these potential disasters legitimize a contract when hiring an IT Support company, right?

Well, no, not really. Think for a second.

The reason contracts exist is that of a lack of trust on both sides. The client doesn’t know if they can trust the IT company to safely handle their entire network and all their digital assets without falling prey to a security breach. Also, the client doesn’t want to be overcharged for every tiny service the company offers. Likewise, the IT company doesn’t want to invest time and energy into a client who is just going to pull out of the deal abruptly.

Believe it or not, these things DO happen…but they don’t have to.

The Problem with Contracts

Now that we understand why IT companies and their clients insist on contracts, let’s look at why contracts are not good for clients

Contracts Offer No Flexibility

First, they offer no flexibility in the services that an IT provider offers. A contract ensures that every service the IT consultant offers is neatly tucked into a plan. Thus, if the client asks for something outside of the plan, the IT provider can come back and, “Well, it’s not in our plan, so we can not/will not do that.” As a result, the client is either denied the service or charged extra for it (the latter happens frequently).

Contracts Are Binding

Second, the client has no way out of the contract without incurring some type of stated or implied penalty. In many cases, a client doesn’t even have the opportunity to test-drive a service, i.e., a 30-day trial service or money back guarantee. They dive head-first into a contract and are now stuck with a long-term commitment.

Contracts Do Not Eliminate Risk

Third, contracts do not necessarily reduce or eliminate risk. IT support Portland companies are hired to properly manage risk. However, if your system is breached, a contract may stipulate in no certain terms that the IT company is not actually liable for the breach — although you are paying them to prevent security breaches.

To complicate matters, some IT companies that enforce contracts do not even provide services that prevent security breaches. Instead, they offer solutions for dealing with the security breach after it has already happened.

Why You Don’t Have to Sign a Contract with an IT Support Company

One of the reasons why we at SureTec do not force contracts on our clients is because we realize there is no need for them. We established healthy relationships with good clients and ensure that they are 100% satisfied with our work. When both the IT support Portland company and the client enter into a positive relationship and work together to create a secure infrastructure, a contract seems pointless.

IT Flexibility is What You Need

While a contract may relieve us of certain obligations, it definitely doesn’t help you, the client who need greater flexibility outside of the contract. After all, we are talking about IT networks, software, and hardware, a complex system that is bound to have a wide range of issues all occurring back-to-back or simultaneously.
